• FAQ's – Portfolios and Cases

Q: What makes the Onyx Portfolio Box different from our archival metal edge boxes?
    • The Onyx Portfolio Box is designed as both a presentation portfolio and a long-term archival storage box. Unlike standard archival boxes, it features a rigid, cloth-covered exterior and a refined, professional appearance that’s often used by photographers, artists, and galleries.
    • While it offers the same archival protection you’d expect from Archival Methods — acid-free, lignin-free materials — the Onyx box is also built to be handled, transported, and presented. It’s commonly chosen when appearance matters as much as preservation.
Q: Can I store matted prints or framed artwork in an Onyx Portfolio Box, Museum Drop Front Box, or Solander Case?
    • These archival boxes are well-suited for storing matted prints and presentation-ready artwork. Their rigid construction helps protect mats from bending and corner damage.
    • They are best used for:
      • Matted or unmounted artwork
      • Portfolio sets prepared for review or presentation
Framed artwork is usually stored vertically inside polyethylene bags or reusable Art Bags to protect from dust and handling. Use Corner Protectors or Foamboard between frames.
Q: Can these boxes be stored flat or upright?
    • These cases are designed to be stored flat and are durable enough to stack several of them.
      • We do not recommend storing these boxes upright because that could put too much weight on the spine. Also, the contents could potentially sag or curl.
